CB&Q GP20 915
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP20 915 westbound at Aurora, Illinois on July 10, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q acquired a total of 36 GP20's (#'s 900-935, later, BN #'s 2036-2071), taking advantage of EMD's trade-in offer. The Q sent its FT's to EMD and various components were removed from the FT's, remanufactured, and used in the GP20's. Those components included: truck frames, traction motors, traction motor fans, fuel pumps, air compressor, cooling fans, water pumps, injectors, camshaft, auxiliary generator, main generator, alternator, air horn, speed recorder, bell, and batteries. The remanufactured parts carried a factory warranty.

CB&Q GP20 918
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP20 918 at Clyde, Illinois on April 20, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built March 1961 (c/n 26589), it became BN 2054 and was retired August 1999. Also of interest is the second unit, EMD 462. It was a former C&NW F7, built as CStPM&O 6501A (c/n 8580) built December 1949, retired January 7, 1959, traded to EMD. This unit was rebuilt in May 1960 (new c/n 26158) and used as a test bed for the 645 series prime mover and other 40-series components. It tested extensively on the CB&Q, eventually being repainted in metallic blue and white. It was finally cut up at Pielet Bros. in 1998 after being held for some time. Offers were made to buy it, but no deal was ever made.

Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP20 919 westbound at Naperville, Illinois, January 31, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in March 1961 (c/n 26590) on EMD Order 7597, it became BN 2055 and was retired and traded to EMD in July 1985. Parts of this locomotive were originally an EMD FT that had previously been traded back to EMD, remanufactured and used in the construction of this unit. It is seen here leading three UP GP30's and a CB&Q GP35 on the CGI (Chicago Grand Island) freight that was scheduled to depart Cicero at 10:30 AM every day. This train used pooled power from the UP and Burlington.

It was built in April 1961 (c/n 26606) on EMD Order 7597, the last of 36 GP20's ordered by the CB&Q. It became BN 2071 and was retired in June 1985. Another interesting feature of this photo is the Phillips Petrolium truck in the middle right of the frame, almost matching the CB&Q paint scheme.

It would appear that 943 is at the head of the CGI, the Chicago Grand Island expedited freight train which featured pooled power from the CB&Q and UP. It also appears to be an occasion of some sort. I could not clearly read the road number of the steam locomotive in the background, but it is numbered in the Challenger series, so perhaps it is 3985.

Baldwin VO-1000 9354 was built in November 1943 (c/n 70105), and was traded in June 1965. It is seen here dead on the IHB setout track, and likely will move about two more miles to the Pielet Brothers (scrap yard) setout track, across from the EMD plant in McCook, Illinois, for final disposition.

On the left in the photo is the CB&Q Reclamation Plant, where many steam locomotives and a variety of rolling stock were scrapped. This yard was also used for interchange with the EJ&E, and the J's main line passed over the CB&Q behind me in this photograph.

This was the rear unit of a light engine move, and I was clearly on the wrong side of the tracks for this shot. However, it does illustrate faithful obedience to Rule 19 (a) which reads: 19. The following signals will be displayed to indicate the rear of every train, as markers, to indicate the rear of the train: (a) By day, marker lamps not lighted, or green flags, in places provided.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP30 959 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on September 19, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1962 (c/n 27170) on EMD Order 7621, it became BN 2236 sometime after the March 2, 1970 merger, was rebuilt in May 1989 to BN GP39E 2754, and in August 1998 was renumbered to BNSF 2744. Cut in behind the motors are four new AT&SF GP35's, likely being delivered to the Santa Fe in a state where the sales tax was lower.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP30 960 at Naperville, Illinois on August 12, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1962 (c/n 27171) on EMD Order 7521, it became BN 2237 and was retired and traded to GE in June 1982. It is seen here as the trailing unit of a road freight switching the Kroehler Mfg. Co. plant in Naperville, a job normally assigned to East End Way Freight. Circumstances I'm not aware of caused the way freight to be annulled on this day, so the factory was switched by this road freight.

Built in July 1962 (c/n 27173) on EMD Order 7621, it became BN 2239 and was retired in August 1982. It would appear that the numberboard on the fireman's side has been replaced. The font is wider and does not match the style on the engineer's side, and it looks like the letter Z has been pressed into service as the number 2.

CB&Q GP30 971
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP30 971 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on February 6, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in May 1963 (c/n 28293) on EMD Order 7652, it became BN 2248 and was retired in January 1985. Eight GP30's were built on EMD Order 7652 (#'s 970-977), and they were Phase II GP30's. At the request of the UP, EMD added a 10 inch cab extension on this side (the left, or Fireman's side) to better accommodate the crew, thus creating a Phase II GP30. The spotting feature of the extended cab is the lack of a stanchion behind the cab at the bend in the handrail. Complete GP30 Phase rosters can be found in the July 1989 Mainline Modeler Magazine, page 53. Note the second freight car in the consist is a tri-level auto rack loaded with new automobiles, to which the CB&Q is applying a liberal coat of diesel exhaust.
