SPS 4-6-6-4 #905 - Spokane, Portland & Seattle |
Description: |
Looking like a massive and forgotten giant in the scrap line is Spokane, Portland & Seattle Challenger type steam #905. Built by Alco-Schenectady in May of 1937 (serial #68995), it had massive tractive effort that helped both of the co-owners, Great Northern & Northern Pacific. After nearly 23 years of service, it was pulled from service and eventually sold for scrap in May of 1960. What a pile of scrap it would have made! Specs - Class Z-6.oil burner, 69" drivers, impressive 250 psi boiler pressure, double sets of 23x32" cylinders, engine weight of 621,000 lb, impressive tractive force of 104,270 lb. No date, location or photographer was listed for this photo. |
