Coal Power. Here is a photo by Richard J. Cook that was taken near Delphos, Ohio, in the Summer of 1946. It was published originally in the "Railroad Model Craftsman" for September 1956, page 61. Photo Caption: "Delphos, Ohio, is a watering stop for locomotives of the Pennsylvania Railroad, 14 miles west of Lima on the Pittsburgh-Chicago main line. Engine 6848 ~ hauling a westbound merchandise train ~ prepares to stop for water as it nears Delphos. The fireman has already climbed to the top of the huge tender, ready to swing the spout into position. No. 6848 is a class M-1 (4-8-2) Mountain locomotive." Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad steam engine #6848, an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during 1926 and retired in May of 1956. (The magazine was a gift from Mr. James W. Young ~ a chemist at the PRR's Test Plant in Altoona, Pennsylvania.) |

Here is a steam locomotive portrait showing (R to L) Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6848 and #5497. #6848 is an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during 1926 and retired in May of 1956. #5497 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during February of 1928 and retired in April of 1958. Note the fireman, takin' five next to the "Mountain's" pilot! The photographer's name, the exact date, and the location are not recorded. (#37 of 40) |

Here is page one of an 11-page cover article by Bert Pennypacker entitled "Atterbury's Engines: Part 1 ~ Great Increases In Horsepower And Speed." It was published originally in the October 1979 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 22. Photo Caption: "Summer of '46: M-1 6848 brings westbound merchandise into Delphos, O., with the fireman already on top of the tank to take water when the engineer makes his spot at the plug.
