| USAX MRS-1 #B-2083 is an ALCO (& GE) built military road switcher (MRS-1) constructed for the U.S. Army Transportation Corps (USATC) in 1953 (Alco serial #80397 & GE serial #31368). The MRS-1 class was designed as a "multi-gauge" locomotive capable of operating on nearly any track gauge worldwide to support potential Cold War combat operations. These units featured adjustable "A1A-A1A" six-axle trucks to accommodate different gauges and a narrow body profile to fit through tight international clearances. Most MRS-1 units, including the "B" series, were held in strategic storage at the Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point (MOTSU) in North Carolina or at the Tooele Army Depot in Utah. In the mid-to-late 1970s, the U.S. Government began selling these locomotives as surplus as they became obsolete. Current status is unknown. This is a Bill Folsom color slide which is now in my rr collection. |
