PRR 646, K-4S, #1 of 4, c. 1953
Here is the first of four original photos by Douglas C. Jones that were taken at the 24th Street Turntable in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1953. Shown here is the front end of Pennsylvania Railroad engine #646, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during March of 1918 and retired in November of 1957 after 39 years of faithful service. In this context, it's on the Turntable having just returned to Altoona from a passenger helper run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin where it uncoupled and returned here, to be turned around, for yet another run up "The Mountain."
