PRR 8679, AS-18AM, 1965
Malinowski. Here is duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Robert R. Malinoski that was taken just West of the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 5 June 1965. Shown here are eight diesel-electric locomotives climbing the East Slope of the Allegheny Mountains with a Pennsylvania Railroad mail and express train bound for Pittsburgh and points West. In the lead are helper engines #8679, #8665, and three more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8679 was constructed in April of 1958, while #8665 was built in February of the same year. Behind them are three unidentified units of the "EP" Class built by GM-EMD. It must have been an exceedingly-heavy train! ("PrrFan18n")
