GN 2-6-2 #1639 - Great Northern
Another 2-6-2 Prairie style steam locomotive sits in a scrap line. Built by Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin predecessor) in June of 1907 as GN 1639it served until being sidelined. The Great Northern wasn't really satisfied with these 2-6-2s. Their use in fast freight brought to light the wheel arrangement's instability at speed. Most were relegated to branch-line service. Specs - serial #31000, class J-2, 69" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 22x30" cylinders, engine weight of 209,000 lb, tractive effort of 37,563 lb. No date was given for the photo so an approximate one was used. Robert Graham photo
