Alabama Southern Railroad
An unusual sight. All CN powered train parked south of Tuscaloosa on the old dead-end GM&O line to Montgomery, now operated by WATCO (ABS Railroad). The orientation of this train suggestes it came in from KCS Artesia, Mississippi.

Chris Martin General They’ve been running them for a couple of years now. The tanks trains come down the CN Yazoo Sub and get on KCS’s Meridian Sub then swing north to Artesia. Usually the ABS will pick up 25-50 of them at a time and carry them to Tuscaloosa to be set out at the Hunt Oil refinery. Sometimes though an extra ABS crew is called and will bring the entire train with whatever road power that it arrived in Artesia. The next day the power will lead the ABS train out of Tuscaloosa to be returned at Artesia. If you’ve been out on Joe Mallisham Parkway going north, when you cross the tracks by Hana Steel look west and you’ll see a new siding that has been put in about a year ago specifically for these oil trains. 9/21/2020 4:46:30 PM
Chris Martin General I should mention that sometimes ABS will tack their freight onto those trains as well and run with the foreign power. 9/21/2020 4:48:52 PM
Rick D General Thanks for that great information Chris! I had no idea that was going on. Hope you are doing well. 9/21/2020 10:51:52 PM
