"Pennsy's Pluperfect Pacifics," Page 55, 1957
Here is page four of a four-page article by Frederick Westing entitled "Pennsy's Pluperfect Pacifics." It was published originally in the September 1957 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 55. Photo Caption: "Baldwin delivered the 5699, the sister that incorporated Caprotti valve motion. Bereft of much reciprocating steel and possessed of a rahter top-heavy-looking front end, the Pacific from Eddystone acquired a racy, leaning-into-it look that shows in photo on page 53." Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5699, a K-5 (4-6-2) "Pacific" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during March of 1929 and retired in September of 1953 after 24 years of faithful service. Included here is a three-place table comparing "Balance and Overbalance" between the two K-5's and a typical K-4S.
