Niles I. Here is the seventh of 11 original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1952. Shown here are two PRR Class "I" (2-10-0) "Decapod" steam locomotives serving as helpers, one of which has a "coast-to-coast" tender. They're rounding the Curve with a train of empty hopper cars that's heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for yet another helper-pusher run up "The Mountain." The number of the N-5C cabin car is not recorded. (#2 of 2) |
