Here is the 16th of 18 photos by Fred McLeod that are included in a souvenir brochure entitled "Horseshoe Curve; Pennsylvania Railroad; Altoona, Pa." Photo Caption: "Custom Built Baldwin Passenger Diesel." Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5771 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All are BP-20's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. #5771 was constructed in June of 1948 and retired in May of 1965 after just 17 years of revenue service. This A-B-A trio is pulling a passenger train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. In this context, "custom built" means that #5771 is equipped with a rotating Mars headlight. |
