Horseshoe Curve-1966. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in mid-May of 1966. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8614 and #8667. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company. #8614 is an AS-24M built in August of 1956 and rated at 2,400 horsepower, while #8667 is an AS-18AM built in February of 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. They're returning to East Altoona for another helper/pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and back. The lower or northern leg of the Curve is also visible at the left, across Burgoon Run. |
