PRR Vice President Morton S. Smith, 1961
Magna Carta. Here is an original photo that I took at the Pennsylvania Railroad Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 29 June 1961. Shown here is PRR Regional Vice-President Morton S. Smith speaking about the need for a "Magna Carta" for American Railroads ~ to include the need for equal regulation for all freight and passenger carriers, the right of railroads to diversify their revenue portfolios, the need to end government subsidies for competing transport modes, as well as the need for more equitable taxation regulations. Mr. Smith is standing on the rear platform of PRR Business Car #7510, the "Pittsburgher." The PRR's 12th Street Shops are visible in the background, along with an eastbound coal train ~ including Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad hopper #72689.
