The Saint Paul Union Depot served the passenger trains of 9 railroads during the height of passenger train travel in the Twin Cities. The depot remained in operation until April 1971. When Amtrak began operation, Amtrak trains stopped at the former Great Northern station in Minneapolis as it was determined that one stop was all that was needed for the Twin Cities. Amtrak now operates out of Saint Paul Union Depot, having vacated the depot it had been using since 1978 when the Great Northern station in Minneapolis was closed and demolished. |
