Drew, Once again an awesome photo. Pardon my ignorance but what do you mean by scrapping sand into the pipes. I thought sand was only used as traction on the wheels.

I believe they add sand to clean the pipes in the firebox. You usually put it in the fire door.....

Coal burners didn't need sand for tge flues---they did need sand for traction on slick rail

they had not filled the dome so the fireman was scrapping what luttle their was into the pipe
