CB&Q Class NE-1 14351
Title:  CB&Q Class NE-1 14351
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class NE-1 14351 at Naperville, Illinois, September 3, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in August 1906 at Aurora, this waycar was regularly assigned to the East End Way Freight, and is seen here on that train heading east after working the industries in Naperville. Notes indicate that it was auctioned of by television station WTTW and sold to a private individual in Prospect Heights, Illinois on May 1, 1977, eventually ending up at Saint James Farm in Winfield, Illinois. It was assigned BN number 11087.

CB&Q NE1 14351
Title:  CB&Q NE1 14351
Description:  CB&Q NE1 14351 on the East End Way Freight at Naperville, Illinois on December 8, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The sign by the door reads: SHIPPING DOCUMENTS LOCATED HERE. Somewhat unusual, but the CB&Q assigned waycars (caboose) to specific Conductors, so this may have been a custom modification. I recall that this waycar was assigned to Mr. John Sylogye.

I became an honorary member of the crew around this date when I started hanging around and they became aware that my step-father operated the cafeteria at Kroehler Manufacturing Company, where the most switching was done in Naperville. I was allowed to fill their coffee thermoses! They got free hot coffee, I was out of their hair for a while, and I felt like I was contributing. I remember the smell of burning coal when I visited the interior of 14351, and I tasted my first cup of coffee in that waycar, hanging out with the crew after we completed the job.

CB&Q NE1 14351
Title:  CB&Q NE1 14351
Description:  CB&Q NE1 14351 at Naperville, Illinois, on June 11, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. It is chalked E END, it was assigned to the East End Way Freight. Below that it is chalked JUD. I don't know what that means, perhaps the Conductor's name.

CB&Q GP7 226
Title:  CB&Q GP7 226
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 226 on the East End Way Freight at Naperville, Illinois on December 8, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built September 1951 (c/n 14690), became BN 1582, and was retired September 1983. It may appear there is dirt in the upper left of this photo, but those are pigeons who took to the air upon hearing a hard coupling. They will make a circle and land back on their home, the top of the Boecker grain elevator in the background. Also pictured is waycar (CB&Q term for caboose) 14351, which for the four years I photographed trains in Naperville was the regularly assigned waycar to the East End Way Freight. It was chalked "E END" on the cupola end by the curved grab iron. It was built at the Aurora Shops in July 1906, became BN 11087, and was retired and donated in January 1971. A note on the donation in the book, Waycars Of The Chicago Burlington & Quincy RR reads: 'Car auctioned off by television station WTTW, Chicago, IL, and sold to a private individual in Prospect Heights, IL on May 1, 1977'. I have no further info at this time.

CB&Q GP7 234
Title:  CB&Q GP7 234
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 234 at Naperville, Illinois on April 12, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is the returning (westbound) East End Way Freight, the evidence is the waycar (CB&Q term for caboose), #14351, regularly assigned to the East End job. The East End Way Freight worked all the industries between Eola and Congress Park, starting about 7:00 AM and returning (seen here) when the work was completed. Usually it would have a few empties to return to Eola, but not today. The way freight always ran as an extra train, in this case, this train is known as Extra 234 West.
