Description:  Shortly after going to tri-weekly operation on 1 October 1970 the SUNSET was on its&way out of New Orleans with its expanded consist at East Bridge Junction. The train was about to begin its ascent of the Huey P. Long Bridge, and was crossing over from the westbound to the eastbound track in the#middle of Central Avenue. Description:  In July 1973 Amtrak replaced the SUNSET LIMITED’s ex-Union Pacific E-units with former Southern Pacific F-units, and this was one of the first trains to once again run with a solid set of F’s waiting to leave New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The 11-car train included AMTK FP7 113, SP FP7 6459, SP FP7 6461, and SP FP7 6448 with baggage car ATSF 3548, three sleepers SCL 6633 CLARENDON COUNTY, AMTK 2013 ORIOLE, AMTK 2213 INDIAN FLUTE, dormitory-lounge ATSF 1341, diner SP 10211, buffet-lounge UP 6201, four high-level coaches AMTK 9918, ATSF 704, AMTK 9956, and 9941. Back then, the track was ballasted with clam shells and weeds :)

Description:  Amtrak train No. 1 – westbound SUNSET – was awaiting its 1:00 PM departure time from New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. Today’s train had four Southern Pacific locomotives: FP7’s 6451 and 6454, F7B 8290 and GP9 3007, with 12 cars. On the left, parked at the REA Express building, were former Illinois Central CITY of NEW ORLEANS observation car 3305 and CITY OF MIAMI car 3300. The cars were privately owned and remained here until 4 January 1972.

Description:  Amtrak's westbound SUNSET was about five minutes out of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, as viewed from the Jefferson Davis Parkway overpass. The train consisted of SP FP7A's 6454 and 6457, F7B 8290, and FP7A 6447 with 14 cars: baggage car 1002, low-level coaches 5231, 4447 and ATSF 2826; high-level coaches 9910, 9932, 9943 and 9901; diner 8035, dormitory-lounge 3390, diner SP 10211, 11-bedroom sleeper STAR CREST, 16-4 SCL ORIOLE and transcontinental 10-6 2759 PALM SUMMIT. The SP F-units always smoked like this when they first left the station, after being parked all night. That's the Louisiana SUPERDOME under construction in the background.
