"Trains" Magazine, July 1961
Title:  "Trains" Magazine, July 1961
Description:  Here is a nighttime photo taken by Mr. Jim Shaughnessy. It was published originally in the July 1961 issue of "Trains" magazine, pages 38-39. Photo Caption: "Pennsy yard engine 3921, little more than one pantograph long, is about as compact a shifter as one could design ~ electric, steam, or diesel. The B-1, caught in flash-bulb glare in Sunnyside Yard, Long Island, measures just 31-1/2 feet over all, weighs 157,000 pounds, exerts 39,250 pounds tractive effort. Pennsy acquired 28 of these 15.9 mph, 570 h.p. shifters between 1926 and 1935 (the 3921 was built in [Juniata during] 1926, converted to 11,000-volt A.C. in 1934)." #3921 was built in Juniata during June of 1926 and retired in January of 1962 after 36 years' service.

"Broadway Limited," Pages 12-13, 1927
Title:  "Broadway Limited," Pages 12-13, 1927
Description:  Here are pages 12 and 13 of a 47-page booklet by Katherine Woods entitled "The Broadway Limited: 1902-1927." It was issued originally by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1927. Herein begins the section called "Behind the Scenes." As for the photo, this would seem to be the engineman's window in the cab of a DD-1 electric locomotive. Permanently-coupled pairs of DD-1's pulled the freshly-replenished "Broadway" out of Sunnyside Yard, through the East River Tunnels, waited for the passengers to load at New York City's Pennsylvania Station, pulled the "Limited" through the West River Tunnels, and finally uncoupled at Manhattan Transfer ~ i.e., present-day Harrison, New Jersey, just East of Newark. Steam locomotives would then pull the "Broadway Limited" the balance of the way to Chicago.

Manhattan Transfer?
Title:  Manhattan Transfer?
Description:  Scenes like this were common in the Jersey Meadowlands in the early part of the twentieth century when PRR K4s were exchanged for DD-1 electrics for the trip under the Hudson into Penn Station New York. Overhead electrification in the 1930s brought an end to this time honored practice but places such as the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania can help recreate these images today. K4 3750 and this DD-1 set might have exchanged many trains in years past.
