Photo Caption: "This New Haven engine, tried out by Pennsy in 1933, served as pattern for the streamlined GG-1." Shown here is engine #0351, an EP-3B (2-C-C-2) electric built by General Electric as number "0351" in 1931, rated at 3,440 horsepower, later renumbered "351," and retired around November of 1963 after 32 years of faithful service.

Description:  Here is page three of a 17-page cover article by Frederick Westing entitled "GG1: Story Of The Most Famous Electric Locomotive In The Western Hemisphere." It was published originally in the March 1964 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 22. Top Right Photo Caption: "R-1 4800, later renumbered, hit an authentic 120 mph on test but was not successful enough otherwise to warrant duplication." Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4800, the R-1 (2-D-2) electric built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during September of 1934, rated at 5,000 horsepower, renumbered "4899" in 1934, renumbered "4999" in 1940, and retired in October of 1956.

Description:  This New Haven unit has the distinction of being the first of the EP-3 units to be removed from service. The unknown photographer notes on the back of the photo "1st 0350 out of service. Failed during 1958." Eventually it was retired in 1959 with the others following by 1961.
