Nice example of the Lima K-3 4-6-2 Pacific built in January of 1923 for the Chicago & Eastern Illinois. Definitely has a different look than the K-1 & K-2 built by Baldwin and the K-2as built by Alco-Schenectady. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo. Since the tender wears the loco number, it must have been taken after 1941 when the "C&EI" was replaced with numbers. |

No date was given but since the tender has the loco number on its side, it has to be after 1941 when the rr dropped the "C&EI" lettering in favor of loco numbers. No photographer was listed either. |

Description: |
BM 3710 was one of the last ten 4-6-2 locomotives that Lima would ever make for any railroad- To mark the delivery of these 10, Boston & Maine sponsored a naming contest among New England K-8 students. The winning name for this first loco was "Peter Cooper" seen as a plate on the side. The loco is posing at the North Station in Boston on this sunny April day in 1938. It had 80" drivers and developed 260 psi boiler prespure. F. H. Donahue photo |

BM 4-6-2 #3710 |
Description: |
Much like its Alco-Schenectady sisters, this 4-6-0 Pacific instead was built by Lima in Decemeber of 1934 and was also a solid performer on the B&M roster. Interesting note from www.steamlocomotives.com "When the Boston and Maine took delivery of its second order of Lima Pacifics in 1937 [these would be the last 4-6-2s Lima would build for anybody], it sponsored a contest among New England schoolchildren to name those ten engines and ten other passenger engines. The contest was open to any pupil in any community along the railroad and included students from kindergarten to the final year of junior high school. to the locomotive a plate with the name of the boy or girl who suggested the name, as well as the name of his or her school. The contest elicited more than 10,000 names for the 20 engines." The name chosen for this loco was "Peter Cooper" The loco was scrapped in September of 1953. Specs - 80" drivers, impressive 260 psi boiler pressure, 23x28" cylinders, engine wt of 339,200 lb and tractive effort w/booster 52,800 lb. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo. |

SUNSET ON BOSTON & MAINE STEAM |
Description: |
B&M P-4-a 4-6-2 3713 has returned to the East Somerville engine terminal (Boston) and is being serviced after taking an excursion train to Portland. This may be the last photo of 3713 in steam. I shot her with available light. Built by Lima in 1934, the Pacific is being restored at Steamtown. Steam continued to power commuter trains for a few more months but 3713 pulled the last long distance steam train and was not suitable for the commuter trains. She lasted this long mainly because she was equipped to operate with a snow conveyor/melter. Note that only half the coal tower shows in the photo - it serviced six tracks. |
