Surfs Up
Title:  Surfs Up
Description:  After painting GP 38-2 252 with a red stripe when delivered to honor the Bicentennial, the LIRR later thought it would apply the scheme to all its GP38s, calling it "Surfs Up." Here we see the unit that would later be named in honor of LIRR president Walter Schlager in that scheme. To the left is LIRR 105, one of the Harold Protect units, that carried adapter couplers to pull MU trains out of the East River tunnel if needed. It would later get a retro dark gray and orange scheme reminiscent of the 1950's and 60's, complete with a Dashing Dan herald.

Wrong side
Title:  Wrong side
Description:  There was about an hour between 1730 and 1830 where there were no westbound trains scheduled on the Main Line between Mineola and Queens. The LIRR used that time to turn line into a double barreled shotgun for eastbounds, using both tracks for them. Heres one of the trains that passes Mineola on its way to Port Jeff running past the station wrong main. behind the engine that would later be named the Walter L Schlager, in honor of the retired LIRR president.

Title:  Reverse meet
Description:  This is a "reverse meet." Instead of getting the front of the trains, I got the back. The diesel train is pushing toward Jamaica. The M 1s got out of the way just in time to get both trains.

Port Jeff surprise
Title:  Port Jeff surprise
Description:  The MP 15 trailing this eastbound Port Jefferson train was not unusual. The GP 38 was. Must have been a power swap, and the GP was tacked on before the train left Jamaica. Interestingly, the two trailing units are the highest numbered in their respective classes. The 277 is named for LIRR president Walter Schlager.

Back to back
Title:  Back to back
Description:  The LIRR ran most of its trains with a single unit as they were not heavy enough to need more than that. Some of the Montauk trains were exceptions, such as this weekend only 4012. The Sunday train was sometimes 14 or 15 cars, since it was used to return parlors to the east end for the New York bound trains starting in on Sunday afternoon. Here we see it with a pair of GP 38s rolling out of Queens interlocking

Schlager to Oyster Bay
Title:  Schlager to Oyster Bay
Description:  LIRR 277, the Walter Schlager, leads an Oyster Bay train through the Forest Hills station. The signals at the west end of the station made for interesting watching. Aside from giving notice of impending moves, it was fun to watch them change positions.
