Beautiful yet powerful is this massive Chicago & North Western 4-8-4 Northern type steam locomotive built by Baldwin in September of 1929. An unknown photographer caught the fireman filling the water tender while the engineer looks out his window. Unfortunately, after only 25 years of service, this beautiful steam locomotive met the scrapper's torch in December of 1954. Specs - serial #61064, class H, 76" drivers, impressive 275 psi boiler pressure, 27x32" cylinders, Worthington feedwater heater, eingine weight of 498,000 lb, tractive effort of 71,800 lb. with a Franklin booster adding another 12,400 lb of tractive effort. No exact day in 1952 was given nor was a photographer listed for this shot. |
