Old CofG depot |
Description: |
We are looking north (towards Athens) at Madison GA. The track furthest to the left (next to building) is the CofG house track, then we have the CofG mainline, then the transfer, then the GA Railroad siding, then the GA Railroad mainline. Cars in the right background sit on the GA Railroad house track. The old CofG and GA Railroad mainlines ran right next to each other through this part of Madison. |

Sign in GA Railroad coach |
Description: |
I guess the GA Railroad wanted you to know in the event the train terminated prior to getting to Atlanta or Augusta (or points in between), you wouldn't be tied up in a siding with the train. |

Interior of the old CofG depot |
Description: |
O.K., this is a first but this is a picture of me while serving as the relief agent at Madison GA for the vacationing regular agent, Bobby McBride. I included two shots to show that the interior of the depot at this time was little changed from years earlier. I am in the process of restoring the train order board to display stop since the local to Macon has just left. Note the dispatchers line, mounted on the desk, which used the phone that pulled from the wall. Also the old manual typewriter, rubber stamps, and neatly arranged files. I was 20 years old at the time and I am glad I came along just in time to experience this as in the few short years a lot of this changed. |

Old meets new in the depot |
Description: |
This photo shows the contrast in old meeting new in the old CofG depot in Madison. By this time Southern had taken over but many features of the CofG days were still evident. The computer I am using represents the newer technology being used while just to my right hangs the dispatchers line which still used a phone that probably dates back to the Second World War. Train order pads and rotary dial phones complete the scene. As a personal aside, the watch I am wearing in this photo is the watch I still wear today. I bought it in 1981 and it is still keeping perfect time. |
