Tank cars
Title:  Tank cars
Description:  As I watched the slow procession over this wooden trestle, its age started to show. Some of the bridge piers have settled. As the wheel sets cross over the bridge, the deck beams under the rails sag about 1 1/2" in 3 places. The resulting noise from the 5 mph train sounds like a chorus of bullfrogs .

K&O stop
Title:  K&O stop
Description:  I overheard the crew radio for a move out of the Newton yard to head north. I had about 15 minutes to get in position and take this shot. But a funny thing happened as they approached my location. They stopped in the shade of some trees. It seemed too early to quit, so I stood in my spot waiting for their move. After about 20 minutes, they uncoupled from the train and moved the motors into the sunlight where I took this photo, but my standing there apparently had made the crew nervous. One gentleman walked over and asked what I was doing, "Are you from the FRA? In this day you never know." I told him, "This is my hobby!" "Oh, you're a phoamer!" He seemed relieved and then told me their plans which was to quit and move some cars in Hesston tomorrow. I wish I had gotten his name.

K&O overtime
Title:  K&O overtime
Description:  I spent 3 hours setting up this shot. It is unusual for the fact K&O seldom works on Sunday. The call came over the radio the crew wanted to enter the Newton rail yard, pick up a cut of cars, and head back to McPherson. I checked the time, checked the weather, and checked the water in the creek. When I got to the location 10 minutes ahead of time, I set up my camera and got in the best location to take advantage of the reflection off the water. The K&O train whistle sounded as it approached giving me notice to lock my view finder on the spot. Just as the engine emerged from the trees, a gust of wind came up and rippled the water, ruining my perfect shot.
