Gotthard northern ramp |
Description: |
A Re 6/6 with a Re 4/4 as second engine in the lead and as helper a Re 620 at the back of the heavy freigth train. Up to 1300 tons can be pulled by an Re 6/6 with an Re 4/4 II (this combination is sometimes referred to as Re 10/10); if the trains are heavier they have to be pushed by an additional Re 4/4 or Re 6/6, because the couplers are too weak to pull the entire train on the steep 28%o slopes. |

Gotthard northern ramp |
Description: |
Tunnelbridge or Bridgetunnel ? The powerful Rohrbach avalanche rushes down the valley every winter. In 1981 a snow powder avalanche (they can reach 180 mph) demolished the rail bridge. Fortunately no train was on it. During 1982 till 1984 a unique 8000t tunnel bridge was built. The construction was built in parallel to the rail track and later moved in. |

Vallorbe Station - SBB Swiss Federal Railways |
Description: |
1875 the French line Pontarlier–Vallorbe with a new tunnel Col de Jougne opened, so a new mainline between the city of Paris and Milan through the Simplonlinie was possible for the first time. Vallorbe became a famous border station between France and Switzerland, with a timely and generous platform building to acclaim the travelers. Today, empty and forgotten, a few local trains and a pair of TGV Lausanne-Paris stops here. |
