The Prairie of Atlantic |
Description: |
On the prowl for IAIS, I stumbled upon #18 instead. Owned by a family in Atlantic, she was fired up on special occasions and run on a siding in town. This engine was never part of the Purple Martin train. After years of outside storage had taken a huge toll, #18 eventually was sent to be stored in a shed on the Fremont & Elkhorn Valley. The demise of the FEVR has made its storage site a big question mark. |

IANR deadline |
Description: |
In the 80s, Iowa Northern was like a ghost to me-couldn't seem to find them running. By this time, the original ex Rock Island equipment had largely died mechanical deaths, and this deadline in Vinton was the norm. I was waiting for a train, that wound up skunking me by going northbound. |

IATR heads to Clear Lake |
Description: |
This was shot shortly after the IATR returned the Clear Lake line to service. For years, nothing had run due to washouts and track conditions. They are hauling in ethanol to the Williams facility in Clear Lake, having finished trackwork only a month before. Only reason I knew about this was work-I had been up interviewing with the track contractor a couple of months earlier. |

IANR 1856 & 1894 |
Description: |
In the early days, Iowa Northern struggled to stay afloat. For quite a while, they ran these 2 Geeps as main power, after a host of ex Rock Island EMDs failed and were struck on deadlines around the system. When I was a trackman for CNW, the arrival of IANR in the CNW Cedar Rapids yard was an every-other day occurance, always behind these 2 units. IANR chalked in small letters on the hoods was the only indicator of the owner. |

Description: |
The DRI was an old-school switching & terminal road, owned by the Class 1s serving the Quad Cities. By 1995, however, mergers had reduced the owners to BN and Soo Line, so they pulled the plug on June 29, 1995. The DRI was split between the owners and ceased to exist, after 100 or so years. Here, the crew is switching their yard in the north part of Davenport, putting together a train to switch Alcoa in Bettendorf. |

The Davenport of Buffalo |
Description: |
Believe it or not, this was a running engine, regularly used. This 35 ton Davenport was used weekly to pull loaded grain hoppers through the dumper. Who needs a coupler on the front when you're only using the back? Reengined with a skid mounted Cat engine, you can see the new radiator through the front. A great little beast, working only a few miles from its birthplace. |

Interurbans at Keokuk |
Description: |
Not real sure the story on these, but rumor was someone brought them to the SE tip of Iowa to haul a tourist train, using a generator car for power. Well, that didn't fly. 161's mate #168 found a home in NY with a museum, and I hope 161 found a good home too. |

Interurbans in Keokuk |
Description: |
Since I first posted this, got some great info from Jerry LaBoda: "This car went on to serve Southeast Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SPAX) as their 168. Sold to Keokuk Junction's Trans-Mississippi Trolley Co. in 1991. It was sold to New York Museum of Transportation in 1996." |

This 20 ton Vulcan was used at the Cargill elevator in Onawa. Website doesn't have a 20 ton Vulcan as an option. Unnumbered, so I used the unit's SN. |

An Alco works Council Bluffs |
Description: |
This operation makes the grade for obscurity. For a couple of years, Alco RS36 900 held down the Council Bluff yard job, making regular transfers to UP. Despite being right there, and the only running Alco for miles, the operation seemed to be ignored by the local railfan base. Here, 900 is coming back from interchanging with UP, past the CB Rock Island depot. |
