Tehachapi Pass Map (Mainlines in Orange) |
| Description: |
Between Bakersfield and Mojave, Tehachapi Pass is the main artery for freight rail traffic entering southern California from points north. Beginning in Bakersfield, the BNSF and UP mainlines join at Kern Junction. BNSF has trackage rights over UP from this point to Mojave. From Bakersfield, the mainline (in orange) runs east-southeast until reaching milepost 326.0, where it begins its climb over the pass. By far the most famous spot on the pass to watch trains is Tehachapi Loop. This spiral raises the tracks an additional 77 feet on a steady 2% grade. After the loop is the town of Tehachapi. UP has a small storage track here for MOW equipment. The tracks finish their descent over the next 21 miles to Mojave. At Mojave, the BNSF Transcon main turns west towards Barstow, while the UP continues south on the Palmdale Cutoff. The mainlines for Los Angeles rejoin at Victorville.
