Taking the siding
Title:  Taking the siding
Description:  I started out this day on an errand. As I completed that task, I heard a horn, which turned out to be a northbound empty TXUX train. I was not able to get it in Siloam, but I did get to Gentry in time to set up on the Ark 12 overpass just in time to catch it approaching the south end of the siding there.

Rolling up the siding
Title:  Rolling up the siding
Description:  The northbound empty train rolls up the siding. In the distance, we can see the loaded train holding short of the Main St crossing. It will pull down as the empty pulls up. KCS is pretty good about not blocking crossings in town when they have a meet. I have occasionally been startled to see a train sitting just south of Lake Frances Rd in Siloam, waiting for a southbound to get into town.

DPUs on the move
Title:  DPUs on the move
Description:  The DPUs from both trains meet just north of the Ark 12 overpass. The empty trains a lot of times get only one unit, and sometimes dont get any, with all the power up front. The current practice on loaded trains is to run them 2x3 on the Heavener Sub, so we have a pair of KCS units tacked on behind the BNSF DPU that came from Wyoming.

New view
Title:  New view
Description:  After waiting for the train to pass me at Gentry so I could shoot the DPUs meeting, I had a hard time getting ahead of it through Siloam, which is a real obstacle in a chase if you started north of there. I passed a shot at Watts, since the train seemed to be making good time past the yard. I wanted to set up for this new angle, possible since the US 59 project had taken down the trees that previously blocked the view. Looks like a good spot.

Indifference
Title:  Indifference
Description:  The cows in this pasture north of Westville seem uninterested in the passing racket as they continue to graze. Shot was taken from the old US 59 alignment-thats the new four lane road in the foreground-which will now be a great location for a long, overhead shot now that the traffic is off it.

I had to do one
Title:  I had to do one
Description:  This is the one wedge shot I got of this train. My preferred spot, about 1/4 mile farther north, where the tracks come around a curve by the DaVita Dialysis building, is now grown over, so I have to compromise. So Im down by the body shop at the crossing. Still, a good lloking train.

By the station
Title:  By the station
Description:  The view from the US 59 overpass south of town shows the head end passing the old passenger station. Its a good view. Id like to try it with a 1000mm lens some time. With 250mm, we still get a decent shot, and a view of the area around the station, as well as a look at the train rolling around the curve to the north.

MP 259
Title:  MP 259
Description:  The TXUX coal train rolls its 124 cars past MP 259 and on toward Sallisaw and Heavener, where it will change crews. If I had more time, I would rn the 27 miles to Sallisaw, and get him passing the yard there. In between, there are not a lot of good, easily accessible photo locations. For today, the chase is off.

Ran him down
Title:  Ran him down
Description:  The down side of chasing northbounds is that most of them are empty trains, grain or coal, mostly. As a result, they move right along. While 40 MPH may not exactly be land speed record stuff, when you have to deal with towns, slowpokes on the road, school buses, etc, keeping up can be hard. This guy was already on the Lincoln Av crossing when I got to it. He beat me to Gentry, and the possibilities at Decatur are slim at this time of day. So I went for almost 20 miles to get him in the hollow between the north end of Dorsey siding and Gravette. Worth the effort!! Note the second unit, one of the gray GE's that has been repainted. There are a growing number of these, but it seems more effort has been put into the EMD's. Most of the SD 70MAC's are painted.

Against the sky
Title:  Against the sky
Description:  After getting the shot in the hollow, he beat me through Sulphur Springs, and I was even with him through Noel. I was looking for a meet there, but nothing coming south. I was able to get ahead for this shot at Ginger Blue, a sun lit shot in the summer, but dark skde in November. Still, the trees cooperated for what turned out to be an OK shot.

Title:  Good light

Surprise
Title:  Surprise
Description:  After shooting the meet of the grain train and the H train DPU, I ran down to county road C in Goodman to get the H train coming around the curve b~ the signal. I had been parked maybe three minutes, and the gates went down. I didnt see the H train, then heard a horn behind me. I was able to get out and grab this shot of a 137 car H train with a CSX leader. He beat me to the south end of Mc Elhany, so I didnt get another shot, electing instead to stay with the southbound, which had much better lighting, especially since I was running out of daylight.

Fields of gold
Title:  Fields of gold
Description:  At the yime of year where the sun is low, and the fields have all gone brown, the late day sun really turns everything gold, a wonderful mellow color that is just golden. A scene like this always brings to mind Stings song Fields of Gold. The only way to improve on!that image is to put a train in it, which KCS was kind enough to do, with this 104 car H train behind three Belles. We see the train at the Goodman detector.

Ballard Creek
Title:  Ballard Creek
Description:  The H train was pulling from the siding, so had a 15 MPH speed restriction through the interlocking. That makes it easy for me to get ahead. This shot is now viable since ODOT is working on widening US 59 through Watts and has cut most of the trees. The bridge crosses Ballard Creek south of Watts.

Title:  High above
Description:  After pulling from the siding, making for a slow start, there is a 30 MPH curve at Chewie Rd that also keeps a train from getting up to speed. The result is, I have enough time to climb the hill along US 59, another vantage point opened up when the road was widened to 4 lanes a couple of years ago. This is the H train seen from the top of the bluff.

Description:  The H train rolls past a cow pasture and creek north of Stilwell. The trees have been creeping up on this shot; only a few years ago it was much more open, and a good part of the train could be seen. This is going to be a problem
Title:  This is going to be a problem
Description:  I had hoped when I started the chase of the H train that I would be able to get a nice, low light angle shot as it passed the station in Stilwell. When I got to the station, I parked, then looked down to check the signal. Thats when I saw the northbound empty TXUX train. My immediate thought was, the empty train will take the siding, letting the 10000 ton merchandiser roll on through. Nope. As it got closer, I could see the coal train was holding the main. Crap. Maybe it will be a rolling meet-KCS often hold an effective meet, and trains almost dont come to a complete stop. It was not to be. The coal train stopped with its rear end about 9 cars too far south, and my shot of the H train was going to be blocked. Curses, foiled again!! This is the head end of the coal train approaching the Stilwell station.

Just south of town
Title:  Just south of town
Description:  The empty grain train rolls through the south side of Gravette, a challenging town to shoot a northbound train in most of the day.

Big rocks
Title:  Big rocks
Description:  The line in this part of Missouri follows Butler Creek up to Noel, where it reaches the Elk River. Over the millions of years it has taken for the valleys to form, many rocks have fallen from the cliffsides, among them some very large ones. The empty grain train passes on of them just south of Noel.

Flowers too
Title:  Flowers too
Description:  The rocks along the line can be a great photo prop, but the delicate and colorful nature of flowers is also appealing. The grain train rolls past some rocks and flowers as it heads north in this wide angle view. The cliff above the trailing units is better seen in a southbound view about 1/2 mile south. The exposed rock makes a dramatic backdrop and was used by KCS for publicity photos.

Beach day
Title:  Beach day
Description:  The empty grain train rolls over the Elk River at Ginger Blue, a group of kids enjoying the high 70 degree day watching the 100 cars roll overhead. This was a one way chase, as there was nothing to meet at McElhany, near Neosho. So it goes.

First inkling
Title:  First inkling
Description:  I was on my way to Stilwell, so decided to take US 59 south from Siloam Springs. When I got to Watts, there was a northbound with four UP units coming up the siding. I shot him at Watts, then went to the bridge, anticipating a meet, since the UP train had rolled on to the north end of the siding. I wasnt there three minutes when this southbound grain train came into view. I got it in the sun, too, something of a suprise, since there was a lot of in and out with the cloud cover. I didnt get so lucky with the UP power, though-got dinked on that one.

DPUs too
Title:  DPUs too
Description:  The grain train was 112 cars, bigger than most. While all of them have DPUs, most have one or two units. This one had three, not very common. Here they are crossing the Illinois River.
