Album Info:Here is an eight-page article by Mr. Harry T. Sohlberg entitled "Horseshoe Curve." It was published originally in the March 1941 issue of "Trains" magazine, pages 28-35. Most of the photos were taken by H.W. Pontin. This article recounts a typical day of steam-powered action at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve ~ about 5.5 miles West of Altoona, Pennsylvania ~ just prior to World War II.

The photo shows H.W. Pontin taking a photo from atop Signal Bridge #2416. The map by Lynn H. Westcott depicts the routes of the Allegheny Portage, New Portage, and Pennsylvania Railroads as they wind their way up, over, and down the Allegheny Mountains.

Top Photo: Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #3733 and #1339. Both are K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacifics" built in Juniata. #3733 was built during February of 1920 and retired in April of 1956. #1339 was built during April of 1918 and retired in February of 1956. They are pulling an eastbound passenger train around the Horseshoe Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia. Note the illustration of an inclined plane and a two-sectioned boat on the Allegheny Portage Railroad (1834-1854).

Bottom Photo: Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #4527 and #6768. #4527 is an I-1S (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during August of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in November of 1942, and retired in June of 1953. #6768 is an M-1A (4-8-2) "Mountain" built in Juniata during September of 1930 and retired in February of 1955. They are pulling a 110-car westbound merchandise freight up the Allegheny Mountains and around the Curve to Gallitzin and points West.

Partial Caption: "Pennsy fast freight, behind an [unidentified] M-1a Mountain type, dives into the west portal of the double-track New Portage Tunnel at Gallitzin, crest of the Alleghenies. This bore was originally part of the New Portage RR., route of Pennsylvania trains before Horseshoe Curve was built in 1854."
