HN 1
Title:  HN 1
Description:  Hutchinson & Northern Railway 1 at Hutchinson, Kansas on August 16, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from the book, Interurban Electric Locomotives From General Electric, by Joseph A. Strapac: This locomotive was GE's second inside-frame truck electric locomotive, built for stock in January 1921 ( c/n 7867 ), weighing 30 tons. In September 1923 it was leased to the Carey Salt Company ( Hutchinson, Kansas ) for use on their client, the H&N, eventually purchased by the H&N in January 1927. In 1919 General Electric began its design of the so-called Frameless truck. In the interests of less expensive manufacturing, GE engineers dispensed with outside bearings, journal boxes, and equalizing bars. In place of the customary two axle bearings, the traction motor itself was modified and provided with a single substantial bearing in place of the usual auxiliary bearings. The gears occupied their usual locations. Each traction motor frame was cast with two pairs of lugs directly over the axle bearing to receive the ends of the equalizer bars. In addition to the usual function of truck equalizers in supporting the transom, they tied the trucks together and held all the parts in alignment. The first GE locomotive with this truck design was construction number 6988, erected at Erie in early 1919. It was a 50 ton model, an engineering prototype, and sent out to demonstrate on the Illinois Electric Railway. After the demonstration, the locomotive ( renumbered E-8 ) spent the years 1921 to 1926 working on GE's captive railroad, the East Erie Commercial Railroad, after which it was sold to the H&N as number 2. Only one other locomotive was built with this truck design, sold to the Lackawanna Railroad ( c/n 10046, built in 1926 ) for use on its Wallabout car float terminal in Brooklyn, New York as DL&W 4001. The H&N 1 was donated to the Orange Empire Museum in 1972, the H&N 2 languished in a scrap yard for years before reportedly finding its way to a museum, the DL&W was sold in 1942 to the Shawinigan Falls Terminal Railway in Canada, renumbered 7, and disappeared.

Description:  Iowa Terminal Railroad 31 at Emery, Iowa on an unknown day, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 31 was built by the Cincinnati Car Company in 1922 as Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee Railroad Mechandise Motor 216. The Iowa Terminal acquired three of these motors after the CNS&M shut down in 1963 (#'s 216, 234, and 239), number 31 (216) was lost in a fire on Thanksgiving day in 1967. Former CNS&M 234 was stored until 1968, then renumbered to IATR 33. The former 239 was never used on the Iowa Terminal but was stripped for parts.

Title:  IATR 33
Description:  Iowa Terminal Railroad box motor at Charles City, Iowa on an unknown day in August 1965, Kodachrome by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. During 1963 the Iowa Terminal acquired three former Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee Railway merchandise box motors ( #'s 216, 234, 239 ) to ease a motive power shortage. The former 216 was renumbered to IART 31 and was destroyed in a fire in 1967. Number 234 was eventually renumbered to IATR 33, stored until 1968 and used in service until 1974. Number 239 was assigned IATR 32, but was never repainted and instead used as a parts source. By process of elimination, I believe this photo shows former CNS&M 234 ( front ) and 239 ( rear ).

BAP 42
Title:  BAP 42
Description:  Butte, Anaconda & Pacific Railway 42 at Rocker, Montana on October 10, 1958, Kodachrome by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. The following is from CERA Bulletin 116, which contained reprints of various the General Electric Company publications, in this case, GE Bulletin CEA-828, published in February 1928: The Butte Anaconda & Pacific is essentially an ore-hauling road, the freight traffic from this source originating at the copper mines located near the top of Butte Hill. From the mines, the trains are lowered down the mountain a distance of 4½ miles to the Rocker yards, located a few miles west of the city of Butte. At this point new main-line trains are made up for transportation to Anaconda. The main-line division extends through a rough, mountainous country, a distance of about 20 miles, with grades as high as 0.3 per cent against the loaded trains and 1 per cent against trains of empty cars. In addition to 32 miles of electrified road, there are also numberous sidings, yards, and smelter tracks equipped with overhead trolley, which makes for a total of 123 miles on a single-track basis.

BAP 48
Title:  BAP 48
Description:  Hurry up and wait on the footboard of Butte, Anaconda & Pacific Railway 48 at Rocker, Montana on October 10, 1958, Kodachrome by unknown photographer (it looks like Dick Rumbolz handwriting on the slide mount), Chuck Zeiler collection. I don't know much about these locomotives except that they were 2400 volt, built by GE in 1914-1915, and featured pin-connected trucks. All the drawbar force was through the trucks, the body rode on top. The following is from CERA Bulletin 116, which contained reprints of various the General Electric Company publications, in this case, GE Bulletin CEA-828, published in February 1928: The locomotive equipment consists of 28 units weighing 82.25 tons each, 27 for freight and one for passenger service, and three 40-ton tractor trucks. The three tractor trucks are used with locomotives in Butte Yard, forming a 120-ton six-axle locomotive capable of handling much heavier trains, but at a slightly lower speed. The motors are GE-229-A commutating-pole type, wound for 1200 and insulated for 2400 volts. Two 1200-volt motors are permanently connected in series. The double unit, 160-ton freight locomotive is capable of giving a continuous sustained output of 2100 horsepower. The 2400 volt contactors are operated from the 600 volt control circuit and are specially constructed to separate the 2400 volts from the coils and interlocks which carry the 600 volt current. The controller provides ten steps in series and nine in series-parallel. The transition between series and series-parallel is made by a special change-over switch, which is operated electro-pneumatically. Current is collected by roller pantographs, pneumatically operated and controlled from the Engineer's compartment by an air valve. A 2400-volt insulated bus runs along the center of the cab roof. These buses are connected together by couplers between the two freight units, so that current may be obtained from either of the two collectors. For operating the control and air compressor and for lighting the locomotive and cars, 600-volt current is suppled from a 2400/600 volt dynamotor installed in each locomotive. This machine is similar to the 1200/600 dynamotor, having two distinct sets of armature coils wound on the same core and brought out to the commutator at each end. One of these windings in designed for 1800-volts and the other for 600-volts, the two commutators being connected in series across the 2400-volt circuit. The load current is taken from the 600-volt commutator.

BAP 64
Title:  BAP 64
Description:  Butte Anaconda & Pacific Railway Alco-GE 64 and 55 at Rocker, Montana on October 10, 1958, Kodachrome by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. Information about these locomotives is a little hard to come by, but here's what I found so far, from the Electric Railway Journal May 31, 1913, verbatim including spelling:

The initial equipment consists of 17 units, 15 for freight and two for passenger service. Each unit weighs approximately 80 tons. The two units forming a freight locomotive in each case will be coupled together and operated in multiple, and combination locomotives will haul the 3400 ton train at a maximum speed of 15 m.p.h against the ruling grade and at 21 m.p.h on level tangent track. The passenger locomotives are the same design as the freight locomotives except they are geared for a maximum of 45 m.p.h. on level tangent track. A schedule of eight passenger trains per day, four each way, is maintained, the average train being composed of a locomotive and three standard passenger coaches. All locomotive equipment, as well as the substation apparatus and overhead line material, was designed and built by the General Electric Company. One of the locomotives will be exhibited at the Master Mechanics' and Master Car Builders' conventions in Atlantic City. The general design is of the articulated double-truck type, all weight being on the drivers. The cab, containing the Engineer's compartment in each end and a central compartment for the control apparatus, is carried by the two truck frames on center pins. It is of the box type, extending the entire length of the locomotive, and is provided with end and side doors. Friction draft gear mounted on the outer end frame of each truck transmits the hauling and buffing stresses directly through the truck frame, diverting these strains from the center pins and underframe. The trucks are built of heavy steel castings. The side frames are of a truss pattern with heavy top and bottom members and pedestal tie bars. They are connected by end frames and a cast-steel center transom. The entire weight is carried on semi-elliptic springs suitably equilized. On each axle is mounted a motor of the twin-geared type. The cab underframe conists of two 12 inch longitudinal steel channels on either side of the center and two six inch X six inch steel angles along the outer edge. The central channels are inclosed and form a distributing air duct for forced ventilation. Air is conducted through the center pins, which are hollow, into the truck transoms and thence to the motors. The Engineer's compartment, at either end of the cab, contains the operator's seat, controller, air-brake valves, bell and whisle ropes, ammeter, air gages, sanders, and other control appartus that should be within immediate reach of the Engineer.

Description:  Waterloo Cedar Falls & Northern 100 at Moravia, Iowa on August 29, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 100 was built in 1914 by the McGuire Cummings Manufacturing Company as an open platform (the end pictured) parlor buffet with motors but no controls, so it was trained with a 140 series car leading. Around 1918, coach seats replaced the parlor seats, and around 1928 a baggage section and controls were added and the open platform was enclosed. In 1956 car 100 was donated to the Iowa Chapter of the NRHS. The car was transfered to the Iowa Terminal in 1966 and destroyed in a car barn fire in 1967.

NJT Arrow II 600
Title:  NJT Arrow II 600
Description:  Arrow II 600 at the Hunterspoint Avenue station in Long Island City, Queens, New York on an unknown day in June 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I believe that these cars were in the employ of New Jersey transit. From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrow_%28railcar%29 : In 1974, General Electric produced 70 Arrow II cars in the married pair format, classed MA-1G. These cars were built in GE's Erie (PA) shops with car shells from Avco. The Arrow IIs were numbered 534-603. They were purchased specifically to replace the ancient PRR MP54s, which were slowly phased out of New Jersey service in late 1977. In service, the Arrow IIs were frequently leased to Amtrak for off-hour Clocker trains. From June 1978 until the summer of 1979, the Arrow IIs were leased to MARC, where they bumped the last operating MP54s from service. Cars 590-591 were heavily damaged in a collision at Seabrook, Maryland on June 9, 1978, early in their MARC service, but were later returned to service. From late 1979 until 1982, the Arrow IIs were loaned to Amtrak and were used for Silverliner Service and off-peak Clockers. Upon the formation of NJ Transit, the Arrow IIs were called back to New Jersey. The Arrow IIs had been well worn during their time with Amtrak, and required a thorough overhaul.

NJT Arrow III 1333
Title:  NJT Arrow III 1333
Description:  Arrow III 1333 at the Penn station in New York on an unknown day in June 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I believe that these cars were in the employ of New Jersey Transit. From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrow_%28railcar%29 : The Arrow IIIs were built in 1977 and 1978 by General Electric in the same fashion as the Arrow IIs. They consist of 200 cars built as married pairs (1334–1533) and 30 single cars (1304–1333). These cars were initially ordered as part of a plan to rehabilitate the NJDOT (Later NJ Transit's) Hoboken division, converting the 3,000 volt DC system to a 25 Kv 60 Hz AC system. However, due to the retirement of the Arrow I MUs, and the Arrow IIs frequently being leased to Amtrak and MARC, as well as delays to the rehabilitation of the Hoboken electrification, the Arrow IIIs were assigned to the former Penn Central electrified lines instead.

NH 4425
Title:  NH 4425
Description:  New Haven 4425 at New Haven, Connecticut on July 20, 1976, Kodachrome by J. H. Nixon, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in 1954 by Pullman Standard on an order for 90 coaches and a few combines, almost all were retired by 1976. The cars (nicknamed Washboards) suffered from a design flaw (stainless steel sheathing over cartbon steel) which not only trapped water causing rust and leaks, but also caused oxidation (electrolsis) between the dissimilar metals.

I believe this may be the IRT Flushing Line at Hunters Point Avenue. Looks like a major bridge adjustment in the background, I'll bet there's a story to go with that. Please see comment below, thanks Tom.
