Three out of four red and gray units on this idling sand train |
Description: |
4223 is designated SD40-2 by the frame stenciling, although it is an SD45 re-engined to SD40-2 specifications. 4192 on the left is an SD40-2 in an SD40's body, and is designated SD40M-2 by the frame as well as the site. |

Faked out |
Description: |
I was looking forward to chasing the train with 4223 leading. After killing a couple hours hanging out in the nice park by the old depot, I went back to check on the train and found a crew van had finally arrived! However, they cut 4223 off and ran it light into a siding across town before taking the train east with the other three units. |

WAMX 4171 passes MP 209 |
Description: |
Between unfavorable light, my annoyance at being cheated out of my expected chase of 4223 leading, and having gotten 4171 (and its big rust spot on the engineer's side) leading several times in the last few months, I left the train behind and drove home to Madison. |

In the Anderson, Inc. siding |
Description: |
L465 left two of their cars on the main, then shoved in and coupled the other two to the long string of tank cars already in the Anderson Inc. siding. Not sure how many of them they were actually supposed to pull, since I couldn't stick around to watch the whole switch. |

Not the shot I wanted of HLCX 6313 leading an all-grain T008 |
Description: |
...but the shot I got. I'd lined up my shot, set the focus, pressed the shutter...and nothing, because I'd forgotten to flip on the power switch on my T8i. I drove ahead and waited at Arena for another chance, but they seemed to stop off to the west of me, and I had other things to attend to. |

Third time catching this unit with the unique short hood leading a train since it was painted in late 2017/early 2018, third time it has been long hood forward. LOL. |

L724 passes the WSOR Burro crane |
Description: |
The Burro set seems to be permanently stored on this siding in Cross Plains, as it's always here when I go by. Never thought to include it in a shot with a train until now. I broke off the chase of L469 after it cleared Olin Avenue to catch up with this, the other train I had a heads up on for this day. |

KRL (Kasgro) 8-axle well flat bearing a transformer, second in L724's train |

Loads like this are somewhat unusual on the WSOR's branch lines out of Madison, so it made this train a worthwhile catch despite the overcast skies and long-hood-forward leaser power. |

Crossing Center Street |
Description: |
Like nearly every crossing on the WSOR by this point in time, the Milwaukee Road or C&NW-era 8" incandescent lamps on the signals have been replaced with 12" LEDs. However, this crossing has not yet had the entire signals replaced with new gated ones, and the uniquely small, high-pitched Western Railroad Supply Co. "mini" mechanical bell remains. It seems the Milwaukee Road was a fairly heavy user of these bells, with at least two or three remaining on all of WSOR's ex-MILW lines out of Madison until the signal replacements began in earnest under Watco ownership in the mid-2010s. |

Rounding the curve past the Old Feed Mill Restaurant |
Description: |
More Milwaukee Road-style switch stands are evident in this shot. WSOR has begun to replace them around their system under Watco ownership, but the Prairie Sub remains a stronghold for now. The switch the power is on is the west leg of the wye for the Sauk City branch, out of service except for car storage since the Wisconsin River bridge was partially demolished due to shifting piers in 1998. |

Finally got my 25 MPH runby and called it a chase...the crew said on the radio they were going to park it in Spring Green, anyway. Most of the slow orders which had been repealed the last time I chased a train out on this line prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, seem to have been re-instated. |
