The chase continues |
Description: |
In an unusual twist, because I usually dont see a return trip, I caught the northbound empty move of the train I had seen the previous Saturday, now returning to the mine. The trailing unit, a CP GE, came off somewhere to the south, but the other four units stayed with the train. We had just finished breakfast in Gentry, when the train came through. We followed it up to just south of Decatur, getting it at a side road crossing south of town. |

It starts when I hear a horn |
Description: |
I was outside working in the yard when I heard a horn, this one coming from a train working up the grade from Watts. I took off, hoping to get a few shots in the fading light. There was enough left to get to Gravette, and it started here at Tahlequah St in Siloam, an ET 44 leading the 54 stack platforms, 10 articulated auto racks, and 7 standard racks of the 181. I was glad to see the ET 44, the second time in a week, since they don't seem to show up here often. |

Coal on the water |
Description: |
We had come down from Gentry, crossing the tracks at Davidson Rd. The signal there showed approach, indicating a southbound on the way. I dropped my wife off at home, and beat it for Watts, getting there just as the dodger was arriving at the north end of the yard. I went to the south end, hoping to catch him working there, where the light would come around for a lit shot. As I reached the south end, here comes this northbound empty AEPX train around the curve. I flipped a U turn and gavew chase, getting ahead of him for this shot on the Illinois River. |

A gray and a Belle |
Description: |
Now that the Belle scheme has been in use for almost 20 years, I always like to see one in the lead, especially since it looks so much nicer than the gray. I should appreciate the gray diesels more, since there are now so few of them. The SD 70MACs got all repainted, and most are now off the roster; the first order of SD70ACe's is also repainted, as finally are the AC44's. About the only group not painted Belle now are some of the KCSM older GEs, one of which is leading the 181 here at Ballard Creek. |

Description: |
I got scooped by the poles in this one, but I had no control over where the actual meet would occur, though the 4821 wasnt moving. Parking is an issue, as there is no paved shoulder here, you have to climb the curb into the grass. Anyway, in one of those "Close but no cigar" shots, as in TRP, the 181 on the right, passes the 262, on the left, and a couple of lineside poles. |

And were off |
Description: |
The 181 cleared the south end of Watts, and the 262 got underway, seen here getting a roll on as it comes around the corner at MP 237. I figured I could chase him to Westville, seven miles south, then get back for the coal train, which still had to move into the siding at 15 MPH, then get to the south end, and back onto the main at 15 MPH. That proved to be a viable approach, and I was able to get some shots of the 262, which has an attractive power set. |

Getting grown over |
Description: |
Its been almost ten years since ODOT widened US 59 here to four lanes. As part of that project, there was a lot of brush clearing. Now, a bit of it has grown back in, and its beginning to obscure what for a few years was a clear shot of a nice S curve. The 262 rolls through, the power now partly hidden. |

Past the barn |

And several rows of hay stored up against it, a picture of rural tranquility, momentarily broken by the passing of a 108 car freight. |

And a DPU |
Description: |
The DPU on the 262 passes the hay bales as it pushes south. I'll let him go at this point, and set up for the coal train, which I will chase to Stilwell. |
