Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2019, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

CN 2672
Title:  CN 2672
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Hwy. 41 and passes the Hwy. G overpass as it heads southwest via a remnant of the former C&NW main line at Snells, WI on 24 Apr. '19. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established on 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This once small, rural community included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any substantial remnants of the community remain, even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone (it is not a station on the CN system map). Train had three locomotives, CN 2236 and ? pulling as well as CN 2672 mid-train. The former SOO main line runs parallel along this side of the train.

IC 3120
Title:  IC 3120
Description:  A CN local services the east side of the Midwest Paper Group mill via former C&NW rails on 27 Apr. '19. Founded in 1889 (some references state 1892) as the Combined Locks Paper Co., it became Combined Paper Mills, Inc. in ‘46 after it purchased a paper mill in PA. Acquired by the National Cash Register Co. in ‘69, it was merged with Appleton Coated Paper Co. in ‘71 to form Appleton Papers, Inc. Commonly known as Appleton Papers Locks Mill, it was controlled by several different domestic and foreign owners over the years. It was separated from Appleton Papers in ‘00 and became Appleton Coated, LLC. Ten members of the mill’s management purchased the facility from France-based Sequana SA on 19 Dec. ’14. Forced into receivership, it was purchased by scrap dealers, Industrial Assets Corp. and Maynards Industries USA, in Oct. ’17. They bought it to shut it down and gut it. By some miracle, they changed their mind and restarted the paper machines. The facility was re-named Midwest Paper Group ca. 19 Apr. ’18. The local was preparing to extract 5 boxcars from the shipping dock.

All that remains is a runaround to access a pair of spurs for this side of the mill (out-of-frame to left) and a spur for the warehouse at right (that spur does not appear to be used much, if at all, currently). The mill's water treatment plant can be seen at left.

Until recently, the 6x6 post in the foreground (with the small, rusty arrow sign) used to support the Combine Locks station sign, the last time I saw it was 31 Mar. '18.

Title:  IC 3120
Description:  A CN local crosses the Fox River Navigation Canal via the former C&NW swing bridge in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 27 Apr. '19. Train was headed back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. I haven't noticed a builder's plate, but according to bridgehunter.com, the Warren through truss swing bridge was built in 1908. It is difficult to tell from this angle, but the train also crosses the Newberry Trail as it approaches the southeast end of the bridge. The canal comes in from the far side of the fence and tree at right. The water in the foreground is the last remaining scrap of what was once the South Channel of the Fox River through 'The Flats.' Old maps reveal that the west end of the South Channel was filled in at some point between 1916 and 1957. Most of the remainder of the South Channel was filled in the following years. This remaining portion forms the confluence with a mill race (behind me) which connects West’s Power Canal (a.k.a. West’s Canal, a.k.a. Grand Chute Island Canal) to the Fox River. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

CN 2874
Title:  CN 2874
Description:  A CN through freight passes the Main St. overpass and approaches the former Sherry St. grade crossing while heading south at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 1 May '19. Train had two locomotives, CN 2874 pulling and CN 2833 mid-train. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks. It was built in 1891, to replace the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

Description:  CW 4037 was part of the consist of a CN through freight paralleling Union St. while heading south at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 1 May '19. The Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., stands beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The original 2-story brick building was constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, a 3rd story was added later. It was home to his N. Simon & Co., a cheese maker as well as wholesaler of butter, cheese and eggs, until he moved his company to Appleton, WI, ca. 1900. He was well-known both for the quality of his cheese as well as for making several gigantic cheeses. His largest weighed 12,361 lbs., was 8’ in diameter and 5’ thick, which he created on 15 Aug. ’11 at Appleton, WI, to be exhibited at the National Dairy Show held in Chicago later that year. By the 1950s the facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolished at some point. It appears to be used for storage now, and has been for quite a while. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca.

IC 9614 and CN 9486
Title:  IC 9614 and CN 9486
Description:  A CN local approaches the Winneconne Ave. overpass as it heads northeast through the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 4 May '19. Local was preparing to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. The tan 4- or 5-story facility partially visible in the background at right is, or was, Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C) Neenah Nonwovens Facility, 1111 Henry St.

CN 8856, et al.
Title:  CN 8856, et al.
Description:  A CN container train approaches Pioneer Dr. and crosses the Fox River via the CN bascule bridge as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 11 May '19. Train had two locomotives, CN 8856 and CN 5695. The bridge was completed in Aug. '13 to replace the 1899 swing bridge. The interesting and historic brick industrial facility at 32-36 Broad St., was erected by Oshkosh’s J. A. Day & Co. in 1870. The flour mill was built for George M. Wakefield, et al., to replace the earlier Oshkosh City Flouring Mills, which stood here until destroyed by fire on 17 May ‘70. That large, old, wooden flour mill (built in ‘56) had been purchased by A. S. Trow & Co. in ‘69 (Wakefield was a partner in that company). When the current facility was completed in ‘70, it became known as the Wakefield Mill, or Wakefield’s Mill, operated by the Wakefield Bros. It continued to be referred to as the Wakefield Mill until at least ‘95, operated by Woodford, Foote & Co. in ‘76, and then Foote Bros. & Co. from about ‘77 until ‘90. It operated as the Foote-Cornish Milling Co. from ‘91 until about the end of 1900. It was home to the Wisconsin Pulp Plaster Co. circa ‘04-‘07. The Baker Paper Co., founded in ‘99, moved into the facility in Aug. ‘14 and owned it until ca. 1993. It is currently home to the Oshkosh-area United Way, et al.

Title:  CN 3197, et al.
Description:  A CN unit train of tank cars crosses an apparently unnamed creek as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 11 May '19. Train had two locomotives, CN 3197 and another unit. The railroad bridge is undergoing repairs. Near the middle of the scene, you can see the abutments and pier that supported a bridge for the interurban line which ran from Fond du Lac to Oshkosh. Opened in 1903 by the Fond du Lac & Oshkosh Electric Railway, it later became part of the Wisconsin Power & Light. The railroad and interurban crossed at grade a short distance to the north. The line was abandoned in '27.

Description:  A CN through freight, with a string of flatcars loaded with MoW equipment, passes the Main St. overpass and leans into the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 11 May '19. Train was slowing in order to prepare to set out and pick up cars and had two locomotives, CN 3041 and EMDX 1606. The north leg of the wye is partially visible at left. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen near the center of the photograph. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The Edward Smith Octagon House, 347 Smith St., is partially visible under the overpass at right. The house was erected between 1851 and 1854. Edward Smith, who operated a flour mill and had an early interest in the Neenah Paper Co., purchased the home in 1855. It has been owned by the Neenah Historical Society since 1993.

Description:  A CN through freight, with a string of flatcars loaded with MoW equipment, passes the station sign as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing (originally Town of Menasha until 14 Apr. '16), Winnebago Co., WI on 11 May '19. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The locomotives are about to pass that turnout and transition to the former C&NW rails to head for Green Bay, WI. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains. Unfortunately, it also reveals the garbage dumped here illegally by lazy, stupid, inconsiderate 21st Century Americans, like the stack of tires at left or the TVs near the signal relay case. The telephone pole in the background at left stands along the former C&NW right-of-way.
