Album Info:Rolling stock with road numbers starting with 90 to 99 - Maintenance of way and other non-revenue wagons, passenger train steam heating wagons, goods train guard's vans, and ex Iscor ballast hoppers, ore cars and some other types. Many non-revenue wagons in the 90 number range are purpose built, but a large number have also been reclassified for non-revenue service, and sometimes modified. Since the two sides of all wagon types are different, I treated the side on which the vacuum pipes are mounted, or where this was not practical, the side on which the brake wheel is mounted to the left of centre, as Side B. Further, since they describe brake systems and not wagon types, I left out the letters D, L, R, V and J in the wagon letter codes. Where applicable, the various complete letter codes and new class numbers for each wagon are included in brackets in the descriptions. The meaning of these omitted letters follow below.

D in position 2, 3 or 4: Dual Power Vacuum Brakes.

L in position 2, 3 or 4: Air Brakes.

R in position 2, 3 or 4: Dual Power Air Brakes.

V in position 3 or 4: Vacuum Brakes.

J in position 2, 3 or 4: Vacuum Brakes with Rejection Lugs on Brake Shoes.

Description:  Class NZ wagons are various types of wagons that were either purpose built or reclassified for use in non-revenue service. This is a Class GZ-9 wagon that entered service between 1965 and 1968 and was designed to transport livestock. A set of four of these wagons have been modified for use during the installation and maintenance of catenary cables by removing most of the woodwork sides and installing a pantograph on one and walkways and rollers on the roofs of all the wagons.

Description:  Class NW wagons entered service between 1936 and 1967 and are wheel carrying wagons that were either purpose built or converted from Class DZ, Class DZA or Class SB-6 wagons in 1969 or later. This one was converted from a Class DZ or Class DZA wagon to carry wagon wheels. The type 2 wagons have channel iron outside braces on their bulkheads.

Description:  Class NS-1 wagons entered service between 1975 and 1976. Side B has two access doors on the cabin side. They are dual voltage (74v and 110v) steam heating vehicles, used to generate steam for heating in passenger coaches. They always run between the locomotive and the first coach on mainline passenger trains, usually only during the winter months. Type 2 wagons have smooth curved roofs to match the rounded roof profile of present day passenger coaches.

Description:  Class NZ wagons are various types of wagons that were either purpose built or reclassified for use in non-revenue service. This is a Class V-3 goods guard's van that entered service between 1975 and 1978. Side A is the bathroom side and its interior layout is, from left, three passenger compartments to seat up to 10 people each, the guard's cabin with a toilet on the near side and a stove on the far side, a door and a seat next to a wall periscope on each side, and a baggage room with a double door on each side. After the use of guard's vans ceased in the 1980's, some were retained for use as shunter wagons and reclassified to Class NZ, to carry shunting personnel on local moves to serve industrial spurs and sidings.

On both sides of the wagon various aspects of Zulu culture are also depic{ed. I suspect the artist was an ex SA Defence Force Zulu soldier, judging from the names incorporated in the artwork. Vryburg, Stella, Kameel, Piet Plessi, Bray and Pomfret.were mostly locations of military bases, while Louwna is the wife of recce Maj Wynand du Toit who spent two years as a POW in Angola.

Title:  SAR Class NS-1 (Side B) (Type 2)
Description:  Class NS-1 wagons entered service between 1975 and 1976. Side B has two access doors on the cabin side. They are dual voltage (74v and 110v) steam heating vehicles, used to generate steam for heating in passenger coaches. They always run between the locomotive and the first coach on mainline passenger trains, usually only during the winter months. Type 2 wagons have smooth curved roofs to match the rounded roof profile of present day passenger coaches.
