CB&Q MWX 251162
Title:  CB&Q MWX 251162
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad MWX 251162 as seen from a 5632 steam fantrip arriving at Galesburg, Illinois on September 29, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. Number 251162 was built by the CB&Q at Aurora, Illinois as Saint Louis Keokuk & Northwestern Office Car 77, as built it measured 55 feet and 3 inches. During 1912 it was sent back to Aurora, lengthened to 60 feet, reconfigured, and became CB&Q Office Car 93. On August 19, 1958 it became Rail Detector Outfit car 251162, a mobile home for the rail defect detector crew. It was sold to screen actor Sterling Hayden and his wife Catherine in June 1966 which he used as his office in Sausalito, California until his death in 1986. I've inquired to the Sausalito Historical Society to find out any further information about this car.

Update; the Sausalito HS sent me a newspaper article dated September 21, 1972 which mentions that the car would be auctioned off to help pay Sterling Hayden's back taxes. However, the article also notes that Hayden's daughter, Gretchen, claimed that the car was never owned by Sterling but was purchased by his wife Catherine for $2,700.00, later given to Gretchen. The car was moved to a siding in Greenbrae, California pending the outcome of lawsuit blocking the auction. More information as it becomes available.

Title:  CB&Q 204739
Description:  CB&Q Scale Test Car 204739 at Naperville, Illinois on November 15, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The sign on the handrail reads: "Do Not Repack Boxes Or Make Repairs Unless Directed By Scale Inspector". This car was built around 1936 by Southwark. The air passes through the car but there are no air brakes so that the brake shoes do not wear down and affect the calibrated weight. It is stencilled on the ends, "To Be Hauled In Rear Of Train". The CB&Q owned two more cars of similar construction; 204740 (built 1944) and 204741 (built 1948). This car had no operating air brakes, The brake wheel was used to manually apply the brakes in a parked situation (on the scale track), the weight of the brake shoes was taken in to account when calculating the rated weight of this car.

Originally a class HC1 on the CB&Q, it has been assigned to Sand Service and painted in the MOW colors. It is stenciled: FOR SAND SERVICE BETWEEN CLYDE AND ___ and the rest is painted out. CB&Q Class MW 212930
Title:  CB&Q Class MW 212930
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad class MW (former Class HC-1) 212930 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in November 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was likely built at Galesburg in 1940. That assumption is based on the trucks. They appear to be National Type B (50 ton), as opposed to National Type B-1 (70 ton). The difference is two inches ( 5 foot 6 inch = Type B, 5 foot 8 inch = Type B-1 ) and larger journal boxes. The spotting feature I looked for was a few ribs where the journal box meets the arched frame, present on the Type B-1, missing (as seen here) on the Type B. That being said, the only CB&Q HC-1's to have Type B were the 100 cars in series 180000-180099 built at Galesburg in 1940. The car is stenciled for SAND SERVICE BETWEEN CLYDE AND (painted over), and to the right it is stenciled HEAVY BAD ORDER CB 10-79.

This car was built by American Car & Foundry in 1916 as a 60 foot baggage mail car numbered 1899, renumbered to 2319, renumbered again October 25, 1945 to 1592 (presumably the 30 Post Office apartment was converted to baggage), became a Maintenance Of Way car in January 1966 and renumbered to 250043.
